Inspired by the temples of Apollo and Mars Ultor in Rome, the Square House attracted by the harmony of its proportions. Only temple of the ancient world completely preserved, the Square House is 26 meters long and 15 wide and 17 high. The ceiling of the pronaos dates from the early nineteenth century, the gate current was conducted in 1824.
The Square House owes its exceptional state of preservation in use continuously since the eleventh century: in turn house, stable, flat church. After the French Revolution, it is the seat of the prefecture of the Gard first and then converted into regional archives before you start as early as 1823, the establishment of museums in Nimes.
The square was redesigned in 1993 by architect Carré d'Art, Lord Norman Foster to create a spatial unity between the two buildings.
