The city of Tournus was born at the beginning of the 1st century AD, when the Romans where building the Agrippa route from Rome to Boulogne sur mer. The city has developed around its two monasteries : Saint Valérien which was built on the grave of Valerien who was martyred in 179, and Saint Philibert which was built on the same site, after it was given by King Charles Le Chauve to the monks of Saint Philibert, driven from Jumièges and then from Noirmoutier by the Normans.
