Lusignan is a town of history and legend, homeland of the Lords of Lusignan, who were at one time kings of Cyprus, Jerusalem and Armenia. The village is buily on a rocky outcrop overlooking a meander of the Vonne valley. Lusignan castle is the largest fortified castle in France, legend has it that the castle was built by Fairy Melusine for her favourite sailor Raymondin. She is also said to have built many forts and medieval churches in the Poitou region. The remains of the castle today are restricted to a part of the keep, the base of the tower, a water tank, the beginnings of an underground tunnel and a stair tower in the wall. A land of history and legends and with a truly exceptional natural heritage, Melusin country is overflowing with unexpected treasures that visitors may stumble upon by surprise. Begin your visit at Sanxay and then go down the Vonne valley to Lusignan, passing through Curzay and Jazeneuil, or alternatively start from Lusignan and go up the valley to Sanxay.
