The museum was inaugurated in 1961 in the left wing of the Palais de Tokyo, a building designed for the International Exhibition of Arts and Technique in Modern Life of 1937.
The municipal permanent collection gives an overview of some of the main movements in European modern and contemporary art : Fauvism, Cubism, Dadaïsm, Surrealism, The School of Paris, abstract art, New Realism, "Supports/Surface", Narrative Figuration…
Temporary exhibitions are an essential part of the museum's activities. Retrospectives and monographic shows devoted to important twentieth-century artists alternate with thematic exhibitions linking the historical and contemporary departments. ARC (Animation – Recherche – Confrontation), the contemporary department, programs events focusing on the current art scene.
