The purpose of the Departmental Museum of religious art is to collect the works of sacred art from the parish churches of the Orne. At its inception in 1969, many of them inaccessible to the public and relegated to the bottom of vestries, were threatened with extinction or decay due to their storage conditions. Located in the heart of Sees Cathedral, the Museum presents the works to the public in chronological order, from the Middle Ages to the early twentieth century. Statues of saints, reliquaries, chalices ... No form of artistic expression, no devotional practice is neglected. The route allows visitors to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of a time when religion is at the heart of all life, from baptism to extreme unction. The value of collections? Testifying both to the simple faith of the peasants, who devote an inordinate worship the relics of their patron saints, as the passionate struggles of theologians whose conclusion is often ... the death of one of the protagonists at the stake.
