The Museum was founded in 1862 by the Society for the Study of Avallon. Generations of local scholars, collectors and donors, often engaged in politics for the Republic, brought together works of great historical and ethnographic. The History of Avallonnais is thus drawn through these collections, creations of sculptors Loiseau-Bailly, Hale and the goldsmith Després. Enlightened collectors (Gariel, Degoix, Goldschmidt ...) must be the presence of early works by Rouault and his famous "Miserere." The Museum retains all the results of the excavations of prehistoric Arcy-sur-Cure conducted in particular by Leroi-Gourhan and his team.
