The underground church St. John, carved in the twelfth century is a place of intense emotion and demonstrates Christian fervor of the Middle Ages.
Its primary purpose was to house the relics preserved in a series of pits and a shrine whose shape is inspired by the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem discovered during the First Crusade. It was obviously done by the limestone wall. It can therefore be described as monolithic.
Its impressive size adds to the mystery and the soil excavated hundreds of tombs show the importance of the sacred place.
This vast cemetery subject to the ravages of time is probably the source of its origin in the memory of her sisters in Cappadocia cave discovered by the Crusaders.
