Fortress Commander Col which passed the Roman road from Clermont to Puy-en-Velay, the castle belonged to the Counts of Auvergne and the Dolphins. Its original construction dates from the late eleventh century, making it one of the oldest castles of Auvergne.
Built around a courtyard, the house is flanked by five towers, three of which remain today.
In the thirteenth century, a square keep replacing one of the corner towers. Captured by the British in 1381, the castle was released in 1393 by the Marshals of Boucicaut and Sancerre.
In 1613, Antoine de Ribeyre, Treasurer of France, becomes the owner of Opme, and does considerable work in the style of the time. Creating an entry of Honour and a large staircase mullioned windows are open, giving clarity and elegance to this fortress once so austère.Enfin the Ribeyre ADJUST, south, in the style of Le Nôtre, two terraced gardens, one with a large circular basin, the other with a Renaissance fountain Androuet attributed to the hoop. More recently, in 1940, General de Lattre de Tassigny, Marshal of France, stayed in this house, when he created the School of Opme Frameworks.
The castle and gardens are, in general, a listed building since respectively 1916 and 1969.
