Tour de l'Osse

Tour de l'Osse

20228 CAGNANO

Tower is a Genoese tower Losso round of the sixteenth century, situated on the coast in the extreme southeast of the town. It was formerly named Torre Aquila (the eagle tower or Acula di mare which means osprey in Corsican language).

Built in 1520, it is one of 10 towers that had the Cap Corse in 1530. The Genoese had imposed on the people building towers at the expense of coastal pievi and communities. With the approach of Barbary ships, the people took refuge in the towers held by garrisons.

The tower is named after the fact that we have found skeletons in its foundation was formed as a tank.

Losso tower stands on three levels and ends with a crenellated terrace. The top floor has a parapet with battlements. In the basement, a tunnel was dug in the rock for the storage of arms and powder. A stone staircase gives access.
Owned by a private company, the building is listed historical monument by decree of December 17, 1926.
