In 1966 that work commenced on the construction of the embankment and the Port of Fontvieille. This operation, which gave the Principality an area of 22 hectares, required 7.5 million cubic meters of fill. After completion of this work in 1973, urbanization has been started and give this new part of the Principality its present appearance.
Covering an area of approximately 8 hectares of the water Port of Fontvieille is very sheltered and has berths for 160 vessels. The dimensions of the basin evolution do not allow the host to dock vessels over 30 meters in length. The Port of Fontvieille is of the "Private Port", meaning that the berths are reserved for the year to their holders. Except in certain defined situations, such as when the holder of a berth is absent, the Port of Fontvieille is not designed to accommodate ships passing through or stopping.
