The Cordouan is 7 km offshore, at equal distance from the coast Gironde and Charente. It is the oldest lighthouse still in business French. Historical monument in 1862 - along with the Notre-Dame de Paris - it was built on a rocky island today cadastral plot No. 1 of the town of Verdon-sur-Mer. Its grand architecture, the result of a long and troubled history, has made a Cordouan Versailles of the sea, a lighthouse whose unique visits can only arouse wonder.
67.50 meters high and 311 steps, it consists of a round tapered masonry and stone resting on a wall of 41 meters in diameter and 8.30 meters high also in stone. At the foot of the wall, a dam 260 feet made of stone facilitates the landing of supplies needed for guards.
