The Fort National stronghold is located on an island of Saint-Malo. The island is accessible at low tide. The fort is the subject of a classification as historical monuments since May 1906.
Formerly known as Fort Royal and Imperial Fort (during the years of the First and Second Empire), the current Fort National was built in 1689 by engineer Simeon Garangeau according to the plans of Vauban and on the orders of King Louis XIV, along the ramparts of Saint-Malo were strengthened, he assured the defense.
