Château de Polignac - Château de la Loire

Probably occupied since ancient times, this site is the property of the Polignac family since the eleventh century. The strategic position commanding the roads to the west and north of the town of Le Puy-en-Velay. For two centuries, the viscounts of Polignac oppose the bishops of Puy in a fight no thank you about tolls on the road of pilgrimage. "The kings of the mountains," valuable allies of the kings of France, but with a strong character independent, will not hesitate to rebel against the royal authority. Louis VI (1080-1137) and Louis XI (1423-1483) had to force the fort to establish their authority.

Later, Arnaud XVI receives the King Francis I (1494-1547) and his party at the Chateau (1533). He will fight with him against Charles. During the religious wars of the Polignac took the party of Henry IV (1553-1610), the fortress became the refuge of the royalists, facing the Puy leaguer. Gradually, the Polignac turned to other properties more livable abandoning the fortress and its turbulent past.
