Built from 1742 on the initiative of Cardinal Fleury and Bishop of Charnizay Menou, it remained unfinished for lack of funds, but is still open for worship in 1784. It is concluded that under the Second Empire, the two towers originally planned were never built.
The cathedral has a very stripped facade, decorated with two orders of Doric and Tuscan columns, topped by a triangular pediment flanked by wings. The interior is no exception to this architectural rigor.
The steeple of St. Bartholomew is Gothic and attached to the apse of the cathedral. While the highest point of the city, it is used as cannon tower against the armies of Louis XIII during the Siege of La Rochelle (1627-1628).
