Archipel du Frioul

This archipelago consists of islands:
• Pomègues of the south.
• Ratonneau of the north.
• Château d'If in the east of both main islands.
• Islet of Friuli Tiboulen west of Ratonneau.

The largest islands of the archipelago is the island Pomègues (2.7 km long, 89 m maximum) and the island Ratonneau (2.5 km long, rising to 86 m). The other islands are Tiboulen and the island of If, on which is built the old prison of Chateau d'If. This fortress would have sheltered Edmond Dantes, the imaginary hero of the novel The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas.

The islands and Pomègues Ratonneau are connected by the dam Berry, which was built in 1822 under Louis XVIII. It was named in memory of the Duke of Berry, murdered in 1820 by Louvel. This dam transformed a anchorages used since the Romans in real port.
