The village of Verteuil with 775 inhabitants, is 5 km from Ruffec and 30 km from Angoulême. Its name comes from the latin «Vertolium» which can be translated by «Clairère des Vertus» from the gallo roman period.
It is dominated by the impressive castle of the family de la Rochefoucauld. Several kings of France such as Francois the Irst, Henry IV, Louis XII and Emperor Charles Quint stayed in this medieval XIème century fortress.
