What is a « mas »?

In Provence a “mas” is a farm house. A “mas” is always oriented South to protect it from the Mistral, the strong wind blowing down the Rhône river valley. There are no openings on the North side and doors and windows are narrow in order to protect it from the heat in the summer and from the cold in the winter. Not all “mas” are farm houses. The very large ones, usually built by the Bourgeois, are called Bastides.

A “mas de ville” tends to reproduce the ambiance of a farm house to give its guests a taste of the rural Provençal living.
